In her September 2 statement, Zena described an Islamophobic incident and thanked store staff for supporting her. A September 4 joint statement expressed solidarity.


In a statement dated September 2, 2026, Zena described being verbally targeted because of her faith while shopping at Food Basics. She said the manager intervened and that she reported the incident to police.
Her statement thanked the store's manager and staff for their support and called for kindness and respect in Oakville.
A joint statement dated September 4 from the Muslim Arab Society, Minority Studies Center, and Multicultural Community Association condemned the incident and expressed solidarity. Both statements are reproduced here.
